How to tell if you have a REAL ID: look at the top right corner of your license. A gold star (or a bear + star in California) = REAL ID-compliant. The words "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" = not compliant.

A passport = the simplest solution. If you have a U.S. passport, you don't need a REAL ID for domestic flights at all.

An EDL contains an RFID chip and a machine-readable zone. It's accepted as a REAL ID and lets you cross the U.S. border with Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean countries by land and sea (not by air).

Compared to a passport: a U.S. passport costs $130 (book) or $65 (card). An EDL in New York is a $30 surcharge on a regular license. If you often drive to Canada, an EDL is the better deal.

TSA ConfirmID is an alternative identification option for those who don't have a REAL ID or passport.

  • Cost: $45 per 10-day period
  • Launch: February 1, 2026
  • How it works: you verify your identity online in advance and get a temporary QR code to pass through TSA
  • Doesn't replace REAL ID: it's a temporary tool for the phased rollout period
Best advice: just upgrade your license to a REAL ID at your next renewal. It takes one DMV visit and costs $0–30 extra. TSA ConfirmID is an expensive short-term fix.
